HOW TO DECLUTTER YOUR JEWELLERY BOX

We all have that Jewellery box on our dressing table or even a few of them hidden in a cupboard. You rarely find what you are looking for, when you are looking for it! Here is our take on decluttering your jewellery box this January, yes ladies, THIS January. No more delays!

Any skilled OCD organiser will tell you, a good clean up starts with categorising.  Here are our categories – Lets start:

The “broken”

Those irreplaceable items that broke and you said: “I’ll get it fixed”.

the “memory makers but fashion forsaken”

It once was your most prized possession, not because of the price tag it once had, but because it was received with love or it sparks a cherished memory of a special person. These items now somehow found their way at the bottom of your jewellery box. Tarnished. Dull. Sometimes in bits and pieces.

The “it cost me fortune, but now I am fortunate to have it”

Have you ever heard the saying “Investing in your guilty pleasures”? Showered with gold and glitter, to avoid feeling all bitter. We say, never feel guilty when investing in good quality jewellery. Your golds and bling will never lose value, even in bits and pieces, bolts and clasps. Bag them and say goodbye, in a little bit we’ll tell you why.

The “day-to-day”

Have you ever seen that lady who will wear a red dress matched with a bold beaded necklace and a pair of earrings? Don’t we envy her? Yes, we do! This year you can also be on point with matching accessories to compliment what your wear.  Start categorising your day-to-days in earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets, then match these items with each other and always keep them together, wear them together and place them back together.

So here’s some good advice for after you have sorted through your jewellery box:

Get all the sentimental items cleaned and polished by a professional. Jewellers have special equipment for eliminating all the stubborn dirt behind stones and ugly scratch marks. Often you will damage it when trying to clean it yourself. Ask your jewellery about a reliable product to maintain the shine on your jewellery after they cleaned it. At Obsidian we stock Connoisseurs Jewellery Cleaners, and for the month of January we are offering a 10% discount on all Connoisseurs products.

Always request that your jeweller check for wear-and-tear and re-tip all claws on rings if need be, this is something we recommend be done at least once year. Our goldsmiths specialise in quality repair work

While you are there, why not get that broken pearl necklace restrung and perhaps consider a more secure clasp? We offer all these services and more!

Did you bag them to say goodbye? Gold prices are at an all-time high, you can make use of this opportunity to get cash for surviving the long month of January or get in-store credit at Obsidian (not all jewellers have this option). Many of our clients use the in-store credit for designing and manufacturing a brand-new item.

Categorising your day-to-days is perfect for seeing just what colours you still need in your accessory range. At Obsidian we don’t only display diamonds and tanzanite’s, but an array of colours and semi-precious stone jewellery, from bright red garnets, lime green peridots and popping purple amethysts!

Then finally, together with a good clean and polish, it is always a good idea to get your valuable jewellery appraised, specify them on your insurance, so that you can be assured that you are never under-insured. Besides at Obsidian the cleaning & polishing is included in the price of appraisals!

What feels better than to be organised and ready to take on the new year with a positive attitude a decluttered mind – and jewellery box?!
